Hurricane Melissa is predicted to escalate to a rare category five hurricane as it veers toward the Caribbean island, causing life-threatening sudden floods and mudslides.

The cyclone, which recorded wind speeds of up to 195 km/h as of 6:00 AM GMT, is now shifting northwest in the Caribbean region and is anticipated to reach land by early next week, based on data from hurricane specialists.

Warnings of power cuts and structural damage have been released as Melissa brings up to thirty inches of rainfall and storm surges as high as 13ft above normal levels. "Take cover without delay," locals have been told.

Melissa is the 13th cyclone in the ongoing Atlantic hurricane season, which normally finishes in late autumn.

Most Intense Hurricane Danger

A highest-level cyclone is the most powerful category, with winds of at least 157mph.

Although Melissa is set to weaken to a category four hurricane before making landfall on Jamaica, experts said there was "very little practical difference in the general consequences" upon making contact with land, and that the storm will be "at least that intensity" when it hits the nation.

Critical Preparations

With tropical storm-level wind and rainfall anticipated well in advance ahead of it passes over Jamaica's central region - possibly even the city of Kingston - advisories emphasize that "readiness efforts must be accelerated".

"A multi-day period of damaging winds and heavy rainfall has started and will cause catastrophic and life-threatening sudden floods and multiple landslides," advised meteorological officials.

Jamaican Prime Minister the official said: "I realize that there are numerous residents who are concerned, who are deeply troubled, and with good reason: worry is natural.

"Yet the most effective method to address anxiety and any unease and concern is to remain prepared."

Inhabitants are being instructed to secure their homes with protective bags and plywood sheets, and to gather necessary supplies.

Regional Impact

Advisories are also active for regions of Haiti including the primary urban center, the neighboring country and eastern Cuba, where Melissa is expected to bring similar effects by the middle of next week.

Mudslides currently triggered by the storm have caused two deaths in the country, according to emergency services.

Future Trajectory

The hurricane is projected to cross Cuba by midweek before moving through the Antillas Mayores and entering the Atlantic Ocean.

By the point it arrives at Cuba, it is predicted to have reduced to a Category 3 cyclone.

Environmental Context

Although it is challenging to associate specific storms to climate change, researchers say it is causing climate patterns increasingly frequent and more severe.

Warmer oceans produce more moisture in the environment, helping fuel the formation of storms.

Before the start of this year's Caribbean cyclone season, climate agencies projected higher-than-average occurrence, referencing heated marine conditions and possible more intense weather patterns around African coastal regions - where Atlantic storms typically originate.
