The Former President's Policies Pose a Threat to Civilized Society.
His national and international policies – ranging from the attempted coup previously to recent moves and threats – weaken both domestic and international legal frameworks. The implications are broader.
They jeopardize the core idea of what we mean by.
The ethical foundation of a functioning society is to forestall the stronger from attacking and exploiting the weaker. Without this, we would be permanently immersed in a conflict of all against all where only the fittest could survive.
This principle is embedded of America’s founding documents. It’s also the heart of the global system established after WWII championed by the United States, which stresses international cooperation, democratic governance, individual liberties, and the legal authority.
Yet, it is a fragile principle, often broken by those who choose to misuse their authority. Upholding it requires that the powerful have the moral fortitude to abstain from seeking immediate gains, and that the public ensure they answer for their actions when they fail.
Unchecked strength does not make right. It makes for instability, upheaval, and war.
Every time entities that are richer and more powerful target and use those that are not, the fabric of civilization weakens. Should such behavior are allowed to continue, the fabric unravels. Without intervention, the world can fall into chaos and war. We have seen this pattern previously.
Today, we live in a global community grown vastly more unequal. Influence and wealth are increasingly centralized than in recent memory. This invites the elite to take advantage of the disadvantaged because they feel above the law.
The resources of a small group of billionaires is almost beyond comprehension. The power of global industrial giants covers much of the globe. Artificial intelligence is poised to further concentrate resources and influence to a greater degree. The destructive power of the world's largest nations is unmatched in human history.
Empowered by a compliant faction and an accommodating high court, the presidency has been turned into the most powerful and unaccountable instrument of the state in history.
Put it all together and you perceive the looming crisis.
A clear connection connects past transgressions to present-day threats. Both were founded upon the arrogance of omnipotence.
One observes parallel dynamics in other global contexts: in military conflicts, in coercive diplomacy, and in the worldwide exploitation by industrial titans.
But, raw power does not create right. It produces uncertainty, upheaval, and war.
The lessons of the past reveal that laws and norms to check the influential also protect them. Without such constraints, their endless appetite for greater influence and riches ultimately cause their collapse – along with their corporations, nations, or empires. And pave the way for world war.
This blatant disregard for rules will haunt America and the global community – and indeed civilized conduct – for years to come.
