Chicago's MLB Team Sign Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on an Major Two-Year Contract.
In a significant move for their retooling roster, the American League club have signed infielder Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a $34 million contract bringing in the accomplished player.
Deal Structure and Player Perks
The contract features a substantial signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, combined with compensation of $16 million for the next season and $17 million for the 2027 year.
Notably, Murakami's compensation is subject to escalators based on accolade achievements in 2026:
- $1 million for being named the league MVP award.
- $500,000 for finishing second or third in MVP voting.
- $250K for placing in the top ten.
- $250,000 for earning the Rookie of the Year honor.
The contract also stipulates that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his approval and makes him a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the deal. Further benefits include a team-provided interpreter and flight reimbursement between Japan and the U.S..
Compensation and Franchise History
As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a posting fee of $6,575,000 to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's Central League. The Swallows get a supplemental fee of fifteen percent triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami will become the fourth Japanese to represent the South Siders, following reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami back in Japan.

Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 soon, joins a young lineup in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he drove in a game-ending two-base hit that drove in Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a come-from-behind 6-5 victory. The next night in the final against the United States, he hit a game-tying home run in the early innings, helping Japan's subsequent title triumph.
