American Mediates Ukraine Discussions in Abu Dhabi as White House Pushes for Conflict Resolution
High-level talks with US, Moscow, and Ukrainian officials are underway in the United Arab Emirates this week, representing the latest step in initiatives to achieve a ceasefire deal to resolve the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Key Representatives and Opening Talks
US Army official Dan Driscoll allegedly conferred with a Russian delegation on Monday night, with dialog proceeding into the following day.
“Negotiations are advancing smoothly with continued optimism. He is working in tight alignment with Washington as discussions unfold,” his spokesperson stated.
Ukraine’s military intelligence chief, Kyrylo Budanov, was anticipated to take part in the discussions, though it remained unclear whether direct engagement with Russian representatives would happen or if separate bilateral sessions would be conducted.
Identity of the Moscow team was uncertain. “We cannot provide details. Our position is to monitor press coverage,” a Russian representative told state media.
Context and Updated Peace Plan
The current talks follow prior negotiations in a European nation where American and Kyiv representatives modified a draft US proposal for ending the war.
Moscow has not yet approved the latest iteration of the proposal and is unlikely to agree to many of the Kyiv changes.
Moscow’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, declared that any revised agreement must embody the “spirit and letter” of what was agreed during earlier high-level talks between the two nations.
International Responses and Concerns
EU leaders are reportedly struggling to remain involved in the negotiations as American representatives assume control.
The Finnish leader, Alexander Stubb, who has emerged as a key mediator between the US and European officials, stated that the immediate future would be critical in attempts to secure a resolution.
He allegedly spoke with Kyiv’s leader and Nato officials, emphasizing that “Decisions about Ukraine’s future rest with its people, and while European security matters are for Europe to resolve.”
Meanwhile, the France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, cautioned against a peace deal that would represent a “surrender” for the nation.
“What was put on the table gives us an idea of what would be acceptable for the Russians. But does this imply it should be endorsed by Ukraine and Europe? Certainly not,” he stated.
Details of the Original American Proposal
The US proposal was originally composed of 28 points and was based on discussions between American and Moscow officials, with input from Ukrainian defense authorities.
Key elements of the proposal allegedly included:
- The nation surrendering areas presently occupied by Russia
- Further regions that would be expected to be voluntarily given up
- Limits on the scale of the military forces
- Immunity for all sides in the war regarding war crimes
Latest Developments and Ongoing Difficulties
The US representative reportedly traveled to Kyiv to update Zelenskyy on the proposal and urge rapid approval.
The demand, combined with the disclosure of the proposal, apparently took by surprise Kyiv and EU officials.
Zelenskyy stated that the country was facing one of the hardest periods in its existence and was being forced to decide between “surrendering honor or sacrificing a vital partner.”
Subsequently, Driscoll informed Nato ambassadors on the plan in the capital, with one participant describing it as “a nightmare meeting” and stating that European officials were shocked by both the substance and manner of the presentation.
The US administration later softened its stance, stating that the 28-point plan was an “initial basis for negotiation” rather than a definitive ultimatum.
Military Developments Amid Talks
While peace efforts proceed, Moscow has maintained its nightly attacks on Ukrainian urban centers.
Moscow’s forces allegedly fired numerous of projectiles and hundreds of drones at targets in and around Kyiv, as stated by Kyiv reports.
The Ukrainian president stressed that Moscow must not feel it could win the conflict while negotiations were ongoing.
“The priority is coordinated diplomatic movement among all partners, through shared endeavors. Sanctions and pressure on Moscow must yield outcomes,” he stated.
Kyiv’s mayor reported that multiple people had been killed in the recent assault on the city.
